Michelle's Marathon Training Log: Week 6

Target Miles: 24
Completed Miles: 27.7

Tuesday: 11/22/2005
Total Distance: 5.52 mi, Total Time: 53:26, Avg Pace: 09:40/mi Avg Speed: 6.2 mph, Total Calories: 567 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 165 bpm

After an exhausting weekend, I skipped my Monday run and started with the Tuesday run. I planned to, and did, get the mileage in on a day of rest later in the week.

Wednesday: 11/23/2005 - ESTIMATE
Total Distance: 2.55 mi, Total Time: 51:18, Avg Pace: 11:17/mi Avg Speed: 5.3 mph, Total Calories: 489 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 130 bpm

...getting lazy with the Garmin. I forgot to stop the clock and my stats include the drive home from the trail. Mileage adjusted, everything else left as recorded. I did run very slow this day as I took my beagle Ivy with me. She's not exactly in shape and is very easily distracted by all the nifty smelling things along the trail...

Thursday: 11/24/2005
Total Distance: 6.91 mi, Total Time: 1:07:41, Avg Pace: 09:47/mi Avg Speed: 6.1 mph, Total Calories: 760 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 162 bpm

Just long enough to feel like I'd gotten in some meaningful exercise before the food fest at my sister's house. We did bring along reasonable food and in the end, I stayed right on plan with my consumption.

Friday: 11/25/2005 - ESTIMATE
Total Distance: 12.72 mi, Total Time: 2:10:43, Avg Pace: 10:16 /mi Avg Speed: 5.8 mph, Total Calories: 1411 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 159 bpm

More operator error with the Garmin. I forgot to reset it after the Friday run, so the numbers above actually cover Friday and Saturday.

Saturday: 11/26/2005 - ESTIMATE

See Friday. :) I've been trying to run slowly on my long runs. My target pace for the marathon is 10:47 /mi. I've gotten good at holding steady at 9:47 /mi -- more practice needed on pacing.

Michelle's Marathon Training Log: Week 5

Target Miles: 22
Completed Miles: ~23

Monday: 11/14/2005
Total Distance: 3.08 mi, Total Time: 30:41, Avg Pace: 09:57/mi Avg Speed: 6.0 mph, Total Calories: 287 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 163 bpm

Not much to say, a run. Nothing earth-shattering. :)

Tuesday: 11/15/2005
Total Distance: 4.23 mi, Total Time: 43:24, Avg Pace: 10:15/mi Avg Speed: 5.8 mph, Total Calories: 442 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 163 bpm

Early run before a 7:30a start meeting.

Thursday: 11/16/2005 -- ESTIMATE
Total Distance: 3.08 mi, Total Time: 30:41, Avg Pace: 09:57/mi Avg Speed: 6.0 mph, Total Calories: 287 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 163 bpm

I forgot my Garmin. This was yet another early run before yet another early meeting.

Saturday: 11/19/2005
Total Distance: 12.76 mi, Total Time: 2:18:55, Avg Pace: 10:53/mi Avg Speed: 5.5 mph, Total Calories: 1426 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 165 bpm

Crappy finish. I was running on a bad night's sleep at the end of a long, very exhausting week. The first 10 miles were awesome, the last two were horrid. All of a sudden, out of nowhere my right knee and right plantar fascia started hurting. I walked most of the last mile. Let's just say running five days a week is teaching me the value of good, solid rest.

Michelle's Marathon Training Log: Week 4

Target Miles: 15
Completed Miles: 25.88

Sunday: 11/06/2005 @ 7:04a US/PT
Total Distance: 13.13 mi, Total Time: 2:06:20, Avg Pace: 09:37/mi Avg Speed: 6.2 mph, Total Calories: 1348 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 164 bpm

See earlier entry on this race.

... I was to run 3 miles on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. With the red-eye to RDU on Sunday, full days on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and the red-eye back to SFO on Wednesday night, I did not run again till Friday. Travel really kills a training plan.

Friday: 11/11/2005 @ 6:36a US/PT
Total Distance: 3.98 mi, Total Time: 40:05, Avg Pace: 10:04/mi Avg Speed: 6.0 mph, Total Calories: 421 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 164 bpm

A wild day. Mid run I got really light headed and stopped at one of the buildings on campus. I actually had to lay down to get back to normal. I finished my run no problem and chalk the light-headedness up to lack of sleep as I'd been up since 4am due to my timezone hopping this week.

Saturday: 11/12/2005 @ 7:21a US/PT
Total Distance: 8.77 mi, Total Time: 1:31:32, Avg Pace: 10:26/mi Avg Speed: 5.7 mph, Total Calories: 962 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 164 bpm

Great run! Despite being up at 4am today as well, this was a good day. Last night I read an article on finishing a marathon feeling good that recommended running the second half of out and backs faster than the first to ingrain the technique for raceday. I kept my average pace at 10:11/mi for the four miles out and ran an average pace of 9:23/mi back. It was the easiest long run I've ever had. With this in mind, I'm going to try planning my splits for the marathon and practicing them during my long runs.

Half Marathon II Complete!

The Stats

Total Distance: 13.13 mi, Total Time: 2:06:20, Avg Pace: 09:37/mi Avg Speed: 6.2 mph, Total Calories: 1348 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 164 bpm

The race has a really cool results page. Click here and enter bib #213.

The Story

Not a bad run! I took about 7 minutes off my time and felt fine throughout the race. It was not a pretty day, foggy and overcast for the duration; the trip across the bridge and back was less exciting as a result, but still good. The course felt hilly, but survivable. This course is close to one half of the San Francisco Marathon scheduled for 7/2006. Running through fog is refreshing in a weird way. The only bad part is a blister/bruise on the tip of my left pointer toe.

I'm glad I ran today. I'm glad the hills were manageable. I am not looking forward to the red-eye to Raleigh...

Monday: 10/31/2005

This was to be an 3-EZ day. I took the day off to recover from the Silicon Valley Half Marathon. I actually felt OK, but there's so much out there on recovery that I thought I should rest.

Tuesday: 11/01/2005 @ 6:08a US/PT
Total Distance: 5.72 mi, Total Time: 55:45, Avg Pace: 9:28/mi Avg Speed: 6.3 mph, Total Calories: 607 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 165 bpm

Thursday: 11/03/2005 @ 6:00a US/PT

I met with running coach Jacquie Mardell this morning as follow-up to the Chi Running course I took a few weekends ago. I did not get in my 4 miles, only running 1 mile or so as most of the time was spent talking about form and doing a few drills. Work finished too late for an evening run and I did not want to run on a treadmill.

Saturday: 11/05/2005 @ 7:44a US/PT
Total Distance: 6.87 mi, Total Time: 1:06:38, Avg Pace: 9:42/mi Avg Speed: 6.2 mph, Total Calories: 755 cal, Avg Heart Rate: 161 bpm

Great run. It's a gorgeous day today and I stopped by Pete's for a double expresso on the way to the trail. My running pace, which has been dropping on its own, was ~9:00/mi. Yahoo! Today was the first time I sprinted towards my finish. I was glad to see I had the energy stores to do so.

Pace Yourself

People keep asking me about my speed...

My official information from the Silicon Valley Half Marathon, per the timing chip, was:

Gun Time: 2:13:39.1
Pace: 10:12
Net Time: 2:12:25.2

The Runner's World Race Time Calculator predicts I can finish my marathon in 4:36:05, a pace of 10:53. In another article, Runner's World says:

First-time marathoners take note: Use one of the following equations to determine your predicted marathon time from your current 5-K, 10-K or half-marathon time:

* M time = 5-K time x 9.489
* M time = 10-K time x 4.567
* M time = half-marathon time x 2.078

Once you've determined your predicted marathon time, divide by 26.2 to get your predicted marathon pace. Now-and this is the important part-run the first 18 miles at 10 seconds per mile slower than this predicted pace. High-five the volunteers, bond with your neighbors . . . then pick it up for the final 8. You'll finish with a flourish, and have a fabulous time in the process. -Andy Palmer

This estimtes my marathon time at 4:34.26, a pace of 10:47. Since 10:50 fits so neatly between 10:47 and 10:53, I'm picking that as my pace goal for the Pacific Shoreline Marathon in February.

There it is -- my pace goal for my first marathon: 10:50. Projected finish time: 4:43. No way. Impossible. I *really* just want to finish in less than 6 hours, on my feet, feeling strong - not dragging myself over the finish line...

BUT ...

Let's say I want to train for a 4:43 finish. The training paces recommended by Runner's Worlds Training Pace Calculator are:

Easy run: 11:59/mi
Tempo run: 10:03/mi
Maximum oxygen: 9:06/mi
Speed form: 8:30/mi
Long run: 11:59/mi - 13:27/mi

None of those sound that unreasonable. I'm not really sure what to do with them, other than apply them to the plan I've been following. I'm also not sure how to test it out, but will shoot for an official pace of 10:50 this weekend at the US Half to see how it feels.

US Half Marathon - San Francisco

This weekend's long run is another half marathon -- the SF US Half.

I'm looking forward to the run across the Golden Gate bridge. I'm looking forward to completing another half marathon. I'm not looking forward the hills...
