Michelle's Mileage

My first (and the second and the third) half-marathon and my first marathon have come and gone. My HTML customization of this site is slow and buggy. :) As such, I'm retiring from this running blog. Michelle's Mileage will now be my new running journal. In it I plan to record my training log, my race results, my personal records, and my thoughts on running as I continue to learn.

All in all it has been an amazing experience. I am so glad I started running -- I have learned so much about life.

I can't wait for my next one in July. There's lots I learned this time that I'll apply to the next one. For now my plan is to follow Hal Higdon's Intermediate I plan and focus on building strength for the last few miles. I'll worry about speed in October for the Chicago...

I can't believe it, but I ran my first marathon today. That's me on the home stretch, feeling a crazy mixture of shock, pride, and exhaustion. I finished around 4:36, 7 minutes ahead of my goal time of 4:43.

Wahoo!

Pacific Shoreline Marathon -- My First

Words cannot adequately describe how I feel as I approach this event. The closest I can get is the adjective intent:

Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin intentus, from past participle of intendere to stretch forth
1 : directed with strained or eager attention : CONCENTRATED, EARNEST, INTENSE
2 a (1) : having the mind or attention closely or fixedly directed on something : PREOCCUPIED, ENGROSSED (2) : reflecting or evidencing strained or concentrated attention or preoccupation b : having the mind or will concentrated on some end or purpose : DETERMINED, RESOLVED, BENT

For those that know me, this may not seem unusual, but I assure you it is different. I could qualify it a bit by saying that I feel intensely intent, but I'm not sure the adverb really adds that much...

I leave tomorrow for LA. I'll drive the course when I get there and relax as much as possible on Saturday. The race is on Sunday. I'll update this blog when I get to Santa Barbara on Sunday night.

My First 20 Miler

The run was great, though a few things did not go as planned. First, my pace. I never got into the 10:47/mi groove. This is my target marathon pace, so more pacing practice required. Second, I did not adequately brief my pit crew, so at the turn I did not have my 'stuff' as expected: goo (chocolate Accel Gel with caffeine), sports drink (Ultima Replenisher) and an NSAID (Motrin), which did not turn out to be a problem. I imagine I'll feel more comfortable with them during the marathon, but learned today I don't actually need them. I had enough energy to finish the last half mile with a pace of 8:30/mi.
